What Prompted Joe Bastianich’s Departure From Masterchef?

Joe Bastianich made his MasterChef US debut during the show’s initial season in 2010. Alongside chefs Gordon Ramsay and Graham Elliot, he served as one of the three primary judges. Bastianich, a former New York-based bond trader, entered the restaurant business alongside his mother and famed chef Lidia Bastianich in 1993, following his passion for cuisine. Since then, he has established a profitable restaurant business throughout the United States. Bastianich explained his 2014 departure from the series in a Facebook post: “As co-owner and partner of the Batali & Bastianich Hospitality Group, as well as Eataly throughout the Americas, I will be focusing my time and energy on their continued global expansion.” In the sixth season of ‘Master Chef US,’ he was ultimately replaced by Christina Tosi.

Bastianich briefly returned to the series in 2018 as a guest judge on ‘MasterChef Junior’ after leaving the show. In 2014, he served as a guest judge on an episode (episode 14 of season 1) of “MasterChef Canada.” Bastianich also served as a judge on ‘MasterChef Italia’ beginning in 2011, a position she maintained until her departure from the US version in 2019. Bastianich departed the show to pursue a career in music. September 2019 marked the release of his debut album, titled “Aka Joe.” In 2020, Bastianich starred in a musical performance tour around Italy.

Bastianich returned to ‘MasterChef US’ as a full-time judge for the ninth season that aired in 2018 and has continued to feature on the show through the eleventh season to date. In addition to his multiple appearances on the ‘MasterChef’ series, Bastianich has expanded his restaurant company and now has a stake in as many as 19 locations. In 2016, he also served as a host for “Top Gear Italia” and authored five books.
