An further Grey’s Anatomy character must depart. Doctor Andrew DeLuca, who also lives in the Station 19 crossover universe, was assassinated by a bad person from the trafficking ring in the midseason premiere. He stabbed him, and even though he was taken to the hospital right away, he unfortunately passed away. The (sad but true) good news? The smugglers were detained.
The plot has parallels to Season 16 when Giacomo Gianniotti’s character Andrew suspects a patient of being trafficked by a fictitious aunt who brought the victim to the hospital for treatment. Everyone assumed Andrew, who has bipolar disorder, was being paranoid because he was in the midst of a manic episode. He did, however, manage to detect the trafficker (Opal), and he was determined to find her. Which he did, killing him in the process. The late Andrew DeLuca.
Fans are speculating whether there was another reason why Andrew was murdered off, even though the plot makes perfect sense. Did something similar occur here given that this is Grey’s Anatomy, a show notorious for killing off cast members for purported personal reasons?

Showrunner Krisa Vernoff clarified her reasoning for killing off DeLuca this season. The most vivid tale I had going into the season, she remarked in an interview with Deadline. “Giacomo came in to meet with us, and we presented it to him once we had a shape and understood when time of the season it would occur. I knew exactly what we were doing and how we were doing it.
“He was so sweet and happy that it wasn’t a story about a mental health crisis. He was merely pleased that we were being truthful with this persona. “that he was dying bravely and that he wasn’t taking his own life. that he wasn’t doing anyone any harm. “that he was honest about his mental health and that he was leaving in a really brave, beautiful way. He had courage.”
