In Hulu’s limited series Candy, the sad story of Candace “Candy” Montgomery and Betty Gore is told again after more than 40 years. The five-episode show, whose title character is played by Jessica Biel, shows what happens after Betty is killed and makes viewers wonder, “Where is Candy now?”

Candy is seen running away from Betty’s house in the first episode of the true crime series. She then gets in her car and drives away. Her hair was wet, candy was coming out of her head, and her glasses were gone.

Betty’s house was silent except for the cries of her baby daughter, who was in a crib upstairs. In real life, the police quickly blamed Candy, but it took them a while to figure out what had happened in the Gore home.

Who is Candy Montgomery?

Candy Montogomery, who goes by the name Candace Wheeler, is an American housewife. She was accused of killing Betty Gore, who was married to the man she was seeing. She hit Gore 41 times with an axe that was 3 feet long. On June 13, 1980, the said event happened in Whylie, Texas.

At the time of the event, Candy was 30 years old. Pat Montgomery, who was an electrical engineer, was her husband. She had two kids, a daughter and a son. She went to the First United Methodist Church of Lucas every week, just like any other Christian wife would.

The Murder of Betty Gore

Betty Gore was a first grade teacher. Her neighbors, Lester Gaylor and Richard Parker, found her dead. Her body was found with 41 axe wounds, and the murder weapon was found in the Texas home she lived in with her husband and children. So, what did happen?

After meeting Betty Gore at a church service, Candy and Betty became close friends. She lived close by with her two kids and her husband, Allan, with whom Candy had an affair.

When Gore’s husband Allan was out of town, everything got bad. When he couldn’t get in touch with his wife, he asked his neighbors to go find her. They tried to force their way in, but it was too late.

Betty’s body had been cut up when it was found. Bethany, who was sleeping in her crib in another room, woke up and started to cry. The prints and fingerprints found at the scene of the crime point to Candy. On June 27, Candy was put in jail.

Candy Takes Plea for Self-Defense

Candy Montgomery’s trial started in October 1980. She admitted to killing Betty Gore, but said it was because she had to protect herself. The trial took place in McKinney for eight days. The jury was made up of nine women and three men.

If we go back to the day of the crime, it all started when Betty’s older daughter, Alisa, spent the night at the Montgomery house and Candy offered to drive her to her swing lesson the next day. When Candy went to the Gore house to get Alisa’s swimsuit, the two wives got into an argument about Candy’s affair with Allan.

Robert Udashen, the lawyer for Candy, said in court that on the day of the fight, Betty attacked Candy with an axe she got from her garage. During this fight, Candy overcharged Betty, which killed her.

But the autopsy showed that Betty had been hurt with an axe while she was out of her mind. Betty also said that she had to use an axe because Gore had tried to hit her with the same weapon just minutes before. Before her trial, Montgomery took a polygraph test, which showed that she was telling the truth.

District Attorney Tom O’Connell, on the other hand, made strong arguments that she could have left the scene. He said that attacking 41 times was too much. Because of this, he said, the case does not fit the definition of self-defense.

In the end, on October 30, 1980, district judge Tom Ryan ruled that Candy Montgomery was not guilty of the crime. People with clear heads were shocked by this verdict. As Candy left the courthouse after being found not guilty, many people criticized the decision and chanted “Murderer! Murderer!” The father of Betty said:

“From my point of view, justice will be done. She has to accept it… I wouldn’t say that I was pleased with the outcome. We don’t know what happened, and we’ll never find out.”

Candy was asked why she was having an affair with someone else even though she had a happy family. She said that her affair with Allan had nothing to do with feelings. It was just to spice up her “very boring” marriage with Pat. She also said that they both wanted to stay married to their own partners.

Candy might get off, but she would always feel bad about what she did. She now goes by the name Candace Wheeler and helps teens and adults with therapy. She and her husband split up after the trial, and Pat moved to Georgia. Good sources say that Candy still lives in Texas.

About the Series

Reporters John Bloom and Jim Atkinson were the first to write about the case. In 1984, they wrote a well-researched book about it called “Evidence of Love: A True Story of Passion and Death in the Suburbs.” The book was a big help in making both of these shows. How do you feel about this situation?

Candy on Hulu shows this horrible story in a “sepia-toned” way. Candy is played by Jessica Biel, and Betty Gore is played by Melanie Lynskey. After more than 40 years, the show will take a fresh look at what happened.

On May 9, 2022, Candy first aired. Michael Uppendahl, who directed Candy and Mad Men, said, “I change how I deal with material based on everything I do. Whether it’s true or not, everything is different. It makes you use different muscles or build muscles you don’t already have.

On the other hand, Elizabeth Olsen plays Candy Montgomery in HBO Max’s Love and Death, which is a limited series. Kelley wrote the series, which is based on a group of articles in Texas Monthly called “Love & Death in Silicon Prairie” and a book called “Evidence of Love: A True Story of Passion and Death.”
