Smaine and Ü repeated their last loop. According to Ü, the Austrian group chose a somewhat different vantage point and exposure when skiing.

Smaine and Ü were switching their backcountry equipment to uphill mode at the base.

The first Austrian member of the group arrived. The second skier from Austria initiated the tumble. “We anticipated its arrival,” Ü said. “We heard the crackle. We grasped its importance. We began to leave and were then attacked.”
