According to reports, as the Apple Developer Conference approaches, Google plans to follow competitors’ footsteps and allow Android users to choose not to be tracked by applications they download from the Google Play Store.
The Google support page detailing how users opted out of third-party tracking caused some sensation. Originally published by the Financial Times, Google will launch a switch for users later this year to disable the sharing of advertising IDs, a device identifier that allows marketers to view your activity from one app to another. Android users can now restrict ad tracking system-wide or manually reset their ad ID to prevent tracking. Google announced the changes to the Play Store policy in an email to the developer. Those who try to access the advertising IDs of users who have opted out will only see a “string of zeros” instead of an explicit numeric identifier.
As part of the Google Play services update at the end of 2021, when users choose not to customize the advertising ID in Android settings, the advertising ID will be deleted. Any attempt to access the identifier will receive a string of zeros instead of the identifier. To assist developers and advertising/analysis service providers in compliance work and respect user choices, they may be notified about their opt-out preferences. In addition, apps targeting Android 12 need to declare standard permissions from Google Play services in the manifest file.
Unlike iOS, it is unclear whether the tracking feature will be turned on by default or whether Google will set it as a known feature or hidden content in the settings panel. But when Android 12 is publicly released, we may have an answer. Google will gradually launch applications that run on Android 12 devices from the end of 2021 and expand to more devices in early 2022.
