But because Vol. I tries to give everyone in the very large cast a good story, the middle episodes are too long and slow down the action after the fourth episode. In the last two episodes, though, the writing and direction get more focused and the pace picks up again. There are some big reveals, unexpected turns, and a cliffhanger that will make fans anxious for the July 1 finale. —Tara Bennett

2. The United States

Years: 2018-2022

April Blair made it.

Daniel Ezra, Taye Diggs, Bre-Z, Greta Onieogou, Samantha Logan, Michael, Evans Behling, Cody Christian, Karimah Westbrook, Monét Mazur, Jalyn Hall, Chelsea Tavares, Da’Vinchi, and Karimah Westbrook are among the actors who appear in the show.

Genre: Sports Drama

Rating: TV-MA

All American, on the CW, is a bright spot of explicitly diverse near-realism (*I’m looking at you, all you unreasonably fit twenty-something Adonises) in a still mostly white network sea of superheroes, the supernatural, and the comically stylized. All American is based on the life of professional American football player Spencer Paysinger. Daniel Ezra plays Spencer James, a star football player from South L.A. who is recruited by a coach (Taye Diggs) from the same neighbourhood to come play for him in Beverly Hills.

This plan requires Spencer to move in with the coach and his family to get around the school’s strict zip code requirements. A lot of the drama that happens next, both in Beverly Hills and back in South L.A., is what you’d expect: The rich kids have expensive pill addictions or are spiralling into depression because their parents leave them alone in their mansions for months at a time while they go on vacation. Meanwhile, the kids in South L.A. are stuck in a school that is chronically underfunded and overpoliced, and they are at risk of joining a gang.

But All American handles all of these problems with compassion and grace, and each of the young actors gives a grounded performance. This gives the show plenty of chances to go beyond primetime melodrama. As the main character, Ezra is great. He is just as interesting when he is vulnerable in private as when he is doing athletic feats on the field. Bre-Z as Spencer’s fast-talking, bar-spouting gay best friend Coop and Samantha Logan as Coach’s daughter Olivia Baker, Spencer’s first friend and confidante in Beverly Hills, are also very interesting.

All American hasn’t made much of a splash in its first two seasons, but when its third season came out, it shot straight to the top of Netflix’s new ranking system and stayed there for weeks. 3.The Lincoln Attorney

Year: 2022

David E. Kelley made it.

Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Neve Campbell, Becki Newton, Angus Sampson, and Jazz Raycole are among the cast members.

Genre: Drama

Rating: TV-MA

The Lincoln Lawyer is a fast-paced thrill ride that follows the emotional and physical trials of L.A.’s best criminal defence lawyer, Mickey Haller (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo). If it doesn’t give a whole new audience a bit of Paste’s favourite detective, Harry Bosch, it at least gives them the Connelly playbook. So, don’t expect anything similar here in terms of style.

David E. Kelley, who made Ally McBeal, is the show’s creator, and Ted Humphrey, who made The Good Wife, is the showrunner. The Lincoln Lawyer is a mix of high-level crime and fun. The story that Harry Bosch is in might be a sun-soaked noir, but the story that Mickey Haller is in is mostly just sun-soaked. This balance works for the most part.

The Lincoln Lawyer has no shame about wanting to be more popular than important. At the same time, though, it sometimes tries to do too much. It has four major criminal arcs and something like 4,000 interpersonal ones. Still, the casting is smart, the acting is good, and the moral and musical connections to Bosch are tight. Fans of Connelly and people who have never read him before will both enjoy this. —Alexis Gunderson

4. Ozark

Year: 2017-2022

Bill Dubuque and Mark Williams made it.

Stars: Jason Bateman, Laura Linney, Sofia Hublitz, Skylar Gaertner

Genre: Drama

Rating: TV-MA

When a middle-class, white-collar family gets involved with a dangerous drug cartel, comparisons to Breaking Bad and Weeds don’t just come up—they’re almost like a handwritten invitation. And it’s true that the premise of Netflix’s Ozark sets us up for another sharp turn; by now, we expect to see a desperate man’s hidden evil come out. But there are a few key things that keep the drug-dealing anti-hero trope from feeling like a song we’ve heard too many times. All of these parts centre on the main character of Ozark, Martin Byrde, and his morals (Jason Bateman).

Here, Bateman plays a dramatic role that is similar to his most famous role, Michael Bluth on Arrested Development. Martin is a man who wants to be honest, but he is also willing to lie if he thinks it will help the bigger picture. (In this case, the most important thing is that his family lives.) Marty, a financial planner, finds himself in the right place at the right time when he finds out he can launder money for the second most powerful group of Mexican drug runners.

He insists on telling everyone this, which is kind of funny. His dedication to “the numbers” and pragmatic, stoic resourcefulness make him a “special” candidate to the cartel’s charismatic (and convincingly scary) Chicago liaison, Del. (Esai Morales). But Ozark is held together by a hopeful message: maybe the right person can go a little bit bad without going all the way bad. Maybe Marty’s hands stay clean because he always has to play “keep away” (and his head, for now, intact). So far, the story is about a man who fights what he thinks is wrong in a way that he thinks is right.

We’ve seen anti-hero stories before, but Ozark takes them to a new level by making the main character not just a rule-breaker who doesn’t follow the rules, but a good bad guy who we want to win. —Kate Watson

7. Fourteenth year

Year: 2022

Alex Hardcastle is the director.

Rebel Wilson, Mary Holland, Sam Richardson, Angourie Rice, Chris Parnell, Jade Bender, Zo Chao, and Avantika Vandanapu are among the actors who appear in the movie.

Type: A comedy

Rating: R

In the first few minutes of Senior Year, we see how Stephanie Conway, played by Angourie Rice, went from being an insecure underclassman nerd in 1999 to a popular (but still insecure) queen bee in 2002. Even though the movie doesn’t make a big deal about how the end of alt-rock led to the rise of lip-glossed, boy-banded poptimism in the early 2000s, there’s a tremor of recognition when watching Stephanie try to fit into the mould of the plastic, self-aware teen movies of that time.

But Stephanie goes into a coma after a terrible cheerleading accident and stays there for 20 years. She is now played by Rebel Wilson. When she wakes up in 2022, she finds a very different world. She feels cheated out of the chance to be prom queen in 2002. Her move fits with the original turn-of-the-century setting: Stephanie’s She’s All That transformation and Bring It On lifestyle have turned into a more promiscuous version of Never Been Kissed, because she insists on going back to high school to finish her last month and reclaim her crown, both figuratively and literally.

She makes a plan with several steps to become popular, lead the cheerleading team, and be voted prom queen. It’s crazy that a 37-year-old woman could go back to her old school and hang out with a bunch of underage students, like Brie (Jade Bender), who is the daughter of Stephanie’s old enemy Tiffany (Zo Chao). But Stephanie’s less popular best friend Martha (Mary Holland) is now the principal of their old high school, and their friend Seth (Sam Richardson) just started working as a librarian.

They support her efforts to start over while trying to steer her away from her most superficial dreams. For a while, the movie fills out the caricatured high-concept ridiculousness of its premise with surprising depth that refuses to indulge pronouns-in-bio sneering at the younger generation. If Senior Year had been willing to go further with its affectionate social satire, it could have become a surprise teen movie classic in the 2020s. Instead, it is determined to show that it also has a heart, and in doing so, it becomes as hungry for likes as any teen’s Instagram. It’s too bad that it goes on for nearly two hours, and most of the best parts happen after the halfway point. —Jesse Hassenger

8. The perfect match

Year: 2022

Stuart McDonald is the director.

Victoria Justice, Adam Demos, Luca Sardelis, and Samantha Cain are some of the stars.

Romantic comedy is the genre.

Rating: TV-14

top 10 netflix series

Victoria Justice plays a wine saleswoman who quits her job and goes out on her own because she is fed up with her rude boss. 9. RRR

Year: 2022

S.S. Rajamouli is the director.

Victoria Justice, Adam Demos, Luca Sardelis, and Samantha Cain are some of the stars.

Romantic comedy is the genre.

Rating: TV-14

The most expensive movie ever made in India, this action-packed historical drama is already one of the biggest hits at the box office. N.T. Rama Rao Jr. and Ram Charan play two Indian rebels who fight against the British Raj. RRR (Rise, Roar, Revolt), which came out in March 2022, is about the two men and their very different paths to revolution.

Komaram Bheem (Rao) is the hero of a rural tribe trying to get back a stolen daughter, and Alluri Sitarama Raju (Charan) is the police officer who is supposed to catch him. The two become friends by accident when they work together to save a young boy in a dangerous situation. But this is Bollywood, so while they are trying to do their different jobs, they also have a full-on dance-off with some cocky British officers. It’s a wild and twisty trip that honours two heroes of India’s fight for freedom.

10. The story of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Year: 20

Tim Burton is the director.

Johnny Depp, Freddie Highmore, David Kelly, Helena Bonham Carter, Noah Taylor, and Missi Pyle are among the actors in the film.

Genre: Family

Rating: PG

top 10 netflix series

The first Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory movie is a classic. Several generations of people grew up loving it. Those little actors made me feel so amazed! Gene Wilder was so funny and mysterious! Then Johnny Depp took his place. He thought that playing a known child molester would make him “edgy” or something. Ugh. Also, why do modern movies always have to have a conflict between a father and a son? Willie Wonka’s problems with his father don’t bother me. We know that the producers had bad fathers. Because of this, you make money. Don’t put it in the movie. — J. Michelson
