Payton Hobart (Ben Platt) ran for student body president at Saint Sebastian High School in Netflix’s The Politician season one. New York State Senate candidate Dede Standish (Judith Light) was the focus of the second season, which premiered on June 19th. And if that stirring look at Dede, in the end, is any indicator, a third season would see Payton in the West Wing corridors.
Get to Know the Cast of ‘The Politician’
The Politician is the brainchild of Glee and Scream Queens creators Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Ian Brennan (Glee, Scream Queens). Payton wins the contest for the Senate, and Dede heads to Washington, D.C., in order to join Georgina Hobart’s (Gwyneth Paltrow) presidential campaign. (I’ll get to that in a sec.) A stolen vote box eventually validates Payton’s victory as the genuine victor, despite the fact that Payton had placed his career on winning elections. However, Dede’s offer to Payton of her future VP position changes everything.

The Politician’s third season is in the works, according to Ryan Murphy.
For a Ryan Murphy show to be renewed, the creative creator must give his initial approval. In a recent interview with Collider, Murphy said, “I would like to do, and I believe all of us engaged in it would probably like to do three seasons total.”
Season 3 of The Politician is intended to be the final season, but viewers will have to wait until then. Season 1 of Netflix’s The Politician debuted in September of 2019 and was quickly followed by season 2 in just over a year. The whole second season of Glee was filmed before the epidemic, except for a FaceTime call between Paltrow and Light that was shot “during the stay-at-home orders.”
Platt’s age, rather than a coronavirus delay, would be to blame for the two-season gap between the second and third seasons. For Ben Platt’s final race, Murphy told Collider, “I’d love to take a couple of years off and let him get a little bit older. “That would undoubtedly be a race for the presidency, am I correct? And I believe that is exactly what we are aiming for. There is no hurry. For now, I’d like to give Ben a few more years before trying to figure out how to gradually increase his chronological age. Nonetheless, it has always been my goal.”
With projects like FX’s Impeachment: American Crime Story about Bill Clinton’s impeachment, a feature adaptation of The Prom, a new season of Pose and American Horror Story, and AHS spin-off American Horror Stories, Murphy is known to be extremely busy.
Payton’s Vice Presidential Campaign Would Lead to a New Season
To win the New York state Senate race for Payton, it was a game of rock-paper-scissors. (Really.) Payton trailed Dede by a significant margin throughout the majority of the campaign. A surge of youthful voters spurred by his commitment to combating climate change allowed him to close in on her poll ratings. There was a draw in the final round, and the game described above was used to determine which team won.
Dede conceded the contest to Payton after being swayed by his youthful zeal (and her own aspirations for the White House). As if Paltrow’s Georgina Hobart’s California gubernatorial victory wasn’t enough, she went on to win the presidential election in the United States. That’s why she asked Dede to be vice president of the organization.
Season 2 ends with Payton reflecting on his environmental achievements in New York two years prior. For the upcoming election, he’s running unopposed and says he’s simply focused on his current post, not attempting to get elected to a different one. When Dede runs for president in four years, Payton will be offered the job of vice president. A second term is not on the agenda for Georgina, who is notoriously unreliable.) Payton is likely to move to Washington, despite the fact that he hasn’t given her an answer.
The Majority of the Outrageously Costumed Cast Will Be Back
Most of the show’s larger-than-life characters are still in Payton’s orbit by the end of season 2. Laura Dreyfuss plays McAfee Westbrook, Rahne Jones plays Skye Leighton, Theo Germaine plays James Sullivan, and Ryan J. Haddad plays Andrew Cashman on his campaign team. He’s also got a new wife (Julia Schlaepfer) and their son Archie by his side as he completes his medical degree.
Dede Standish’s campaign manager Hadassah Gold (Bette Midler), Georgina’s Chief of Staff, will be back as well. Paltrow, Deutch, and Lucy Boynton, who played Astrid Sloane and Infinity Jackson, are all possible returnees. In addition to Jessica Lange, Dylan McDermott, Bob Balaban, and January Jones who left Season 1, there were several new faces joining the cast for Season 2. Season 2 characters Teddy Sears, Joe Morton, Sam Jaeger, and Heather Burns could fall into this category. The return of David Corenswet as River, Payton’s inner voice, suggests that anything is possible.
