Steven Frederic Seagal was born in Lansing, Michigan on April 10, 1952. At the age of five, he moved to Fullerton, California, with his parents Patricia and Samuel. In 1970 and 1971, he attended Fullerton College after graduating from Buena Park High School in Buena Park, California.

When he was young, he began his martial arts training with aikido and Shito-ryu karate. When Seagal was seventeen, a friendly Japanese coworker at a dojo in Garden Grove urged him to take his first trip to Japan. He first met Miyako Fujitani in 1974.
