It’s been a while since the last Star Wars movie, but Star Wars: Rogue Squadron will bring the force back to the big screen. It also has a release date, and Patty Jenkins, who directed 1984’s “Wonder Woman” and “Monster,” is in charge of breaking new ground in a galaxy far, far away.
The plot of Star Wars: Rogue Squadron is likely to cause a lot of debate, since Disney and Jenkins are going to combine parts from the books and video games in the Extended Universe with a lot of new material. The official Lucasfilm announcement says, “The story will introduce a new generation of starfighter pilots as they earn their wings and risk their lives in a boundary-pushing, high-speed thrill ride, and move the saga into the future of the galaxy.”
The good news is that it looks like the movie will still be made, even though there were fears it wouldn’t. Worse news? We have a long way to go yet. There was plenty of time to watch all of the Star Wars movies in order. Here’s more about this.
Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, talked about Star Wars: Rogue Squadron at the 2020 Disney Investors Day event. This isn’t even the only Star Wars movie in the works. Kennedy also said that Taika Waititi is working on a Star Wars project that doesn’t have a name yet.
The Latest News About Star Wars: Rogue Squadron (Updated March 29)
A fan said that Patty Jenkins has talked to a key author in the Star Wars Expanded Universe.
Rogue Squadron is still on Disney’s schedule for the holidays in 2023.
The movie’s director, Patty Jenkins, told the AP that Rogue Squadron brings the original books and games into a “new age” and that it’s important to “honor” them.
The Official Disney Release Says
A calendar that came out on February 25, 2022, still had Rogue Squadron on December 22, 2023.
Rogue Squadron Crew in Star Wars
Rogue Squadron is, of course, being directed by Patty Jenkins. In June 2021, Variety reported that Matthew Jenkins will write the movie, but Disney has not confirmed that report. Love and Monsters and The Invention of Lying are two of Jenkins’s past movies.
Movie Trailer Talk About Star Wars: Rogue Squadron
We don’t have a trailer, and it will be a long time before we do, since the show won’t come out until late 2023. You should not expect something to come before the spring or summer of 2023.
But director Patty Jenkins showed us a clip for the Star Wars: Rogue Squadron announcement that got us all excited for her entry into the Star Wars universe.
Star Wars: Rogue Squadron Movie Plot
If you thought Star Wars: Rogue Squadron would just be a movie version of the same-named video game and books, you were wrong. But don’t be afraid.
IGN says that Patty Jenkins told them that “We’re making something new, but the games and books have had a big impact on it. There are a lot of things being said and understood about how great all of those things are, but yes, it’s an original story and I’m so excited to do it.” She told the AP (opens in new tab) that the movie will “honor” the books and games that came before it, but that “it must be brought to a new age because we have to tell a new story with it.”
This news got better when a fan named “just brad” tweeted from the account @Jedi4Liberty that Star Wars Extended Universe author Michael Stackpole told him that Jenkins “had been in touch with him early on.”
So, we might expect the movie to make a reference to Wedge Antilles’s work. He was the one who put together the original Rogue Squadron, which was a group of elite pilots (which Luke Skywalker captained). The Rogue Squadron books were part of the Star Wars Extended Universe, which was basically wiped out when it was said that “Star Wars Episodes VII-IX will not tell the same story told in the post-Return of the Jedi Expanded Universe” (opens in new tab). This was done to give the filmmakers as much creative freedom as possible and to keep an element of surprise and discovery for the audience.
When Will the Movie Star Wars: Rogue Squadron Come Out?
We’re going to have to wait for a while, so don’t get in your X-Wing too soon. The date that Star Wars: Rogue Squadron will come out is December 22, 2023.
But we’ve had some rough spots on the way there. The Hollywood Reporter (opens in new tab) said that the movie would not be made until after 2022 because of delays. In his newsletter, Matthew Belloni of The Hollywood Reporter said that this was because of “creative differences” with the script (opens in new tab).
In the same announcement, the people behind Star Wars left the door open for this kind of movie by saying, “Creators of new Star Wars entertainment have full access to the rich content of the Expanded Universe.” This means Jenkins will be able to use what he needs to without being completely tied to the books.
Jenkins told THR (opens in new tab) that the movie could also be the start of the post-Skywalker Saga era “I’m really excited about the story and the fact that we’re starting the next chapter of Star Wars, which is both a big responsibility and a great chance to start something new. In that way, it’s really exciting.”
