Queens Season 1 Recap
The Nasty Girls were merely a gang of estranged ladies with a slim chance of making it big again at the start of season one. By the end, all four ladies had learned something new about themselves and had influenced other women, such as Lauren (aka Lil Muffin) and Zadie (aka Lady Z).
The Nasty Girls disbanded because Valeria and their manager Eric defrauded Jill, Naomi, and Brianna out of their money in the 1990s. The band – and Eric and Valeria – split up as a result of a complicated love triangle between Eric, Naomi, and Valeria.
Though there’s still animosity between Valeria and Naomi, the women agree to work together to try and bring the group back to life. Throughout the season, all four of them go through it both personally and professionally, but they also gain real relationships with each other.
First, Brianna’s husband Jeff , cheated on her with his student. Before she could even process that betrayal, he found out that he had brain cancer and only a little while left to live. Shortly after, Jeff died and Brianna was left with her children and a student of her husband who found out she was pregnant by vomiting on Jeff’s corpse at his funeral.
When Jill’s husband went crazy, he shot Brianna when he was trying to reach Jill and since then she and her children have been happily living on the beach in Costa Rica.
Meanwhile, Jill, who was secretly cheating on her traditional Christian husband Darren (Emerson Brooks) with her girlfriend Tina (Felisha Terrell), came out of the closet on live TV. After dealing with divorce, ruining her relationship with Tina, and handling hateful accusations from her father, Jill was almost killed when Darren attacked her, the Queens, and Eric with a gun.
Valeria started the season as a recently-fired television personality and eventually reconciled with Naomi, Jill, and Brianna while learning some things about herself. She tried to get in contact with her birth mother but instead was scammed and threatened by a woman pretending to be her mom. She also finally began her career as a Latin artist and ended the season with a successful solo tour under Nasty Girl Records.
Naomi worked hard all season to reunite the Queens after realizing how much they meant to her. At first, she wanted to start a solo career, but eventually rejoined the group and has been loyal to them ever since. This season, she also re-built her relationship with her daughter Jo jo, forgave Valeria, and slowly began to trust Eric again. In the end, they confessed their love for one another and got married in a beautiful ceremony.
If Queens is renewed for a second season, I think we’ll see a lot more of the dynamic between all four women. Since being almost killed halfway through the season, Brianna has been missing from the show. It seems like she may have returned for the Queens world tour in the finale, but we won’t know for sure unless the show gets renewed.
If Brianna does return, it will be fun to see the Queens finally get the tour and time together that they almost had before Bri left the states.
We’ll also probably see more development for Lauren, Lil Muffin, and Jojo. Since Jojo dropped her surprise track, and Lauren released a new album and got into USC, it’s likely we’ll get to see how both of their careers begin to take off, and hopefully more of Lauren’s interest in death row activism.
Jo jo chose to take a paternity test in the season one finale, to see if Eric or Cameron was her father. Though she decided Eric was her family no matter what in the end, it would be interesting to see what the results are and if that changes her relationship with Eric.
