Paul Leonard Newman was born in Shaker Heights, Ohio, on January 26, 1925. Paul grew up in a Jewish family, and he was interested in theater from a young age. At age seven, he was already taking part in school plays. He was performing at the Cleveland Play House when he was 10 years old. Paul studied acting for the next few years, all through his childhood, until he graduated from high school in 1943.
After going to Ohio University for a short time, Newman joined the U.S. Navy and served during World War II. He was trained as a radioman and rear gunner and served in the Pacific theater. During his time in the military, Paul was stationed in Hawaii and taught new combat pilots how to fly. He worked as a turret gunner in an Avenger torpedo bomber in the end.
After the war, Newman went back to school and got a Bachelor of Arts in drama and economics from Kenyon College. After he graduated in 1949, he went on tour with several theater groups before going to the Yale School of Drama. After that, he trained at the Actors Studio in New York City with Lee Strasberg.

When Newman moved to New York City in 1953, the first production of “Picnic” was his first show on Broadway. During this time, he made his first appearance on TV with “Tales of Tomorrow.” In 1954, he was in “The Silver Chalice,” which did not do well at the box office. He then starred in “Our Town” with Frank Sinatra and Eva Marie Saint. After “Somebody Up There Likes Me,” “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,” and “The Long, Hot Summer,” he made more movies.
In the 1960s, Paul started getting more and more lead roles in big movies. During this time, his roles in movies like “The Hustler,” “Cool Hand Luke,” and “The Towering Inferno” earned him a lot of praise. “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” was a very popular movie during this time.
In the 1980s, Newman continued to star in well-known movies like “The Verdict” and “The Color of Money.” In the second movie, Paul played the same part he had played in “The Hustler,” for which he won an Academy Award. In the 2000s, Newman went back to Broadway to be in the play “Our Town.” “Road to Perdition” was the last movie in which he was in. His last role on TV was in the HBO miniseries “Empire Falls,” which aired in 2005. In the 2006 animated movie “Cars,” he did the voice of Doc Hudson. Paul Newman stopped acting for good in 2007, not long before he died.

Paul Newman was on the Bob Sharp Racing team and raced in the Trans-Am Series from the mid-1970s to the early 1990s. Even though he was 70, he was still racing, and his team was winning races like the 24 Hours of Daytona. In 2005, the Baja 1000 and the 24 Hours of Daytona were his last big races. He was also well-known for the Newman Freeman Racing team, which did well in the Can-Am series, where Newman drove a Spyder NF. In 2009, Newman was added to the Sports Car Club of America Hall of Fame after he had died.
