The director of studies at the Pencil Film and Television Centre was Femi Ogunrombi. In the 1970s, Ogunrombi relocated with his parents from Abeokuta, Ogun State, to Lagos, Osun State, where he was born in Ife, Osun State.

Ogunrombi worked briefly at the General Hospital in Ikeja, Lagos, prior to enrolling in nursing school in 1975. In the 1980s, after developing an interest in music and the arts, Ogunrombi returned to school to study dramatic arts at Obafemi Awolowo University.
He established and directed the OAU choir The Ayoro Voices. Between 1980 and 1990, this group represented the culture of the university. Before quitting government service in 1998 to launch his own music company, he organised and directed the National Choir.
