Early Life of Nardwuar

John Ruskin was born under the name Nardwuar in Vancouver, British Columbia on July 5. His mother was Olga Ruskin (née Bruchovsky), and his father, Vernon Ruskin, was an engineer.

As a child, he was drawn to the entertainment world. Everyone was entertained by Nardwuar’s participation in a school speaking contest. During this period, he was a junior in high school.

In 1986, as a teenager, he picked the name Nardwuar, which he says has no special significance. Hillside Secondary School in West Vancouver is where he earned his education. Nardwuar conducted his first classroom interview in September 1985, when he was still a student at the school.

After that, he received offers from bands to perform at school gatherings. His first models were members of the rock band Poisoned, who had just finished performing at the school dance. Nardwuar assisted with the booking after asking his other classmates who they wanted to see most that evening.

After completing high school, he was admitted to the University of British Columbia (UBC). He learned how to be a skilled journalist and researcher by observing his mother at work.

In the 1950s, his mother Ogla began her career as a journalist before becoming a high school teacher and working in cable access television in the 1970s and 1980s. She worked as a reporter in Vancouver and hosted the programme Our Pioneers and Neighbors, in which she interviewed locals from the city’s many communities.

While attending UBC, Nardwuar began writing about the Lions Gate Bridge in Vancouver and the killing of John F. Kennedy. The university awarded him a bachelor’s degree in history in 1990 upon completion of his studies.
