“I simply knew I desired more power at the end of the day. “I really wanted to be able to choose what I wanted and be heard and respected for the choices I was making,” she explains, adding that “the experience was very healing for me.”

Peregrym, age 40, and her husband, Tom Oakley, age 41, had their child at home with the assistance of a midwife and a doula, which they describe as “care so different.”

She explains, “There was no intervention the second time around.” “It was still a new experience for me because I did not have Pitocin and I did not know how my body would labour normally.”

During this period of transition, the duo separated, with Oakley caring for Otis and Peregrym concentrating on Mela. Peregrym acknowledges that it was challenging, but states, “I couldn’t image my life without any of them,” adding that it is even more challenging now that she has returned to work.
