In 1996, after completing her education, Truss began her professional career at Shell. In 2000, after four years, she joined Cable & Wireless and rose to the position of economic director.

After losing her first two races, Truss joined the full-time deputy director of a think tank, The Reform Research Trust, in 2008. She co-authored The Value of Mathematics, A New Level, and several more reports with her colleagues. She subsequently established the Free Enterprise Group of Conservative MPs.

Political Travel

She belongs to the Conservative Party. From 1998 to 2000, Truss served as chairman of the Lewisham Deptford Conservative Association. She was elected Eltham South councilwoman in Greenwich.

Then, from 2012 to 2014, she served as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Childcare and Education. In 2014, during a cabinet reshuffle, she was named Secretary of State for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs by Prime Minister David Cameron.

Even though she backed the Britain Stronger in Europe campaign for the United Kingdom to remain a member of the European Union during the 2016 vote, she supported Brexit when the results were announced.

Theresa May nominated Truss Secretary of State for Justice and Lord Chancellor in 2016 and then Treasury Chief Secretary in 2017.

Truss supported Boris Johnson’s campaign to become leader of the Conservative Party and was subsequently appointed Secretary of State for International Trade and President of the Board of Trade when Johnson became prime minister.

She has been elected as the representative for South West Norfolk for nearly a decade. Truss was appointed Foreign Secretary in 2018 and Minister for Women and Equalities from 2019 to 2021.

Truss recently stated in a news article, “The economy will be the primary issue in the next election, and we have been heading in the wrong path on taxes. The primary issue will be whether we pursue growth and tax cuts or continue business as usual and increase taxes.

She continued, “I am the candidate for tax cuts who would support struggling families by reversing April’s national insurance increase and postponing the green charge on energy bills.”

Truss reaffirmed her commitment to achieving NetZero carbon emissions by 2050. Very soon, there will be two televised discussions, one presented by the BBC on July 25 and the other by Sky News on August 4.

Members of the conservative party (about 160,000) will vote online or by mail before August 5, and the final result will be published on September 5.
