Who is Jack Ruby?
Jack Leon Ruby was an American nightclub owner who was born on April 25, 1911, and died on January 3, 1967. He is thought to have been a member of the Chicago Outfit and killed Lee Harvey Oswald on November 24, 1963, two days after Oswald was accused of killing President John F. Kennedy.
Ruby was found guilty of killing Oswald by a jury in Dallas, and he was sentenced to death. Ruby’s conviction was later overturned, and he was to get a new trial. However, he got sick in prison and died on January 3, 1967, of a pulmonary embolism caused by lung cancer.
In September 1964, the Warren Commission said that Ruby was the only person who killed Oswald. He shot him on impulse and out of grief over the death of President Kennedy. Several critics disagreed with these conclusions. They said that Ruby was connected to major figures in organized crime and that he was part of a larger plan to kill Kennedy.

Ruby was born Jacob Leon Rubenstein in the Maxwell Street neighborhood of Chicago between March 25 and April 25, 1911. His parents, Joseph Rubenstein and Fannie Turek Rutkowski (or Rokowsky), were both Orthodox Jews from Sokoów, Poland.
Ruby was the fifth of his parents’ 10 children who had lived to adulthood. Ruby’s parents were often violent toward each other and often split up when he was growing up. His mother was eventually sent to a mental hospital.
His troubled childhood and adolescence were marked by juvenile delinquency and time spent in foster homes. At age 11, he was arrested for not going to school in 1922. Ruby eventually skipped school so much that he had to spend time at the Institute for Juvenile Research.
When he was still young, he sold horse-racing tips and other oddities. Later, he worked as a business agent for a local garbage collectors union that later joined the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT).
From the time he was very young, people who knew him called him “Sparky.” His sister, Eva Grant, said that he got the nickname “Sparky” because he looked like a horse in the modern comic strip Barney Google named “Spark Plug” or “Sparky” who moved slowly.
“Spark Plug” first appeared in the comic strip when Ruby was 11 years old, in 1922. Other stories say that the name came from the fact that he got angry quickly. No matter what, Grant said that Ruby didn’t like being called Sparky and would fight anyone who did.
Ruby went to race tracks in Illinois and California a lot in the 1940s. He was drafted into the U.S. Army Air Forces in 1943 and worked as an aircraft mechanic at U.S. bases during World War II until 1946. He had a good record, so he was moved up to the rank of Private First Class. In 1946, when he got out of the army, Ruby went back to Chicago.
Ruby moved to Dallas in 1947. Soon after, he and his brothers changed their last names from Rubenstein to Ruby. The reason given was that “Rubenstein” was too long of a name and that he was “well known” as Jack Ruby.
Jack Ruby was known as a colorful personality. In these photos taken by Dallas Morning News photographer Bill Winfrey during a pre-trial press conference held by Ruby and his attorneys, you can see some of the many faces of Jack Ruby. #JackRuby #CarouselClub #RubyTrial pic.twitter.com/oY4DfAdekp

Ruby went on to run a number of nightclubs, strip clubs, and dance halls in the future. He became close with a lot of Dallas police officers who went to his nightclubs and got free drinks, prostitutes, and other things from him.
Ruby never got married and didn’t have any kids. Ruby was living with George Senator at the time of the assassination. During the Warren Commission hearing, Senator called Ruby “my boyfriend,” but he denied that the two were gay lovers.
Later, Burt Griffin, a lawyer for the Warren Commission, told author Gerald Posner: “I’m not sure if Senator told us the truth about how he knew Ruby. In 1963, people did not talk about being gay “.
