After its release as an early access title in July 2017, Fortnite became a hit. Within months, the game had millions of daily players, and the popularity of the game sky-rocketed. The game’s growth was spurred on by Twitch streamers, too, with popular streamers like Tyler ‘Ninja’ Blevins.
What Is Fortnite?
For those of you who’ve been living under a rock, we’ll quickly discuss what Fortnite is and its gameplay. Fortnite (see also ‘How to Win at Fortnite? ‘) is a free-to-play Battle Royale video game published by Epic Games. In it, 100 players are dropped onto an island, and must fight it out with other players to be the last player(s) standing. Players can either fight alone or in ‘squads’ of two, three or four players. Continuous progression is guaranteed by the ‘storm’, a life-draining force that gradually constricts the playing area and forces remaining players into an ever-tighter area.
Eventually, one player or team will remain, with that team emerging victorious. Upon its release, Fortnite’s unique selling point was its construction elements. Players could interact with the environment by demolishing items to obtain resources (for example, destroying brick walls to obtain bricks), which they might then use to construct their own creations. These constructions might provide important tactical benefits, such as the ability to construct a protective wall. Fortnite gamers who could make the most of the game’s building mechanics swiftly rose to the top.

How Popular Was Fortnite at Its Peak?
350 million people have downloaded Fortnite since it launched in the summer of 2017. For comparison, that is two times what Minecraft, another video game success, has accomplished since its 2009 introduction, which was eight years before Fortnite. It’s one thing to have a large user base, but how many of those are actually participating in the game? Well, in August 2018, Fortnite reached an astounding peak of 78.3 million active users.
Perhaps shockingly, Fortnite’s greatest daily player count was actually attained much more recently, in May 2021. According to calculations, the game had almost 35 million players on a specific date, which is insane!
How Popular Is Fortnite Now?
Fortnite had a peak daily player count of 24,124,603 in April 2022, and an average monthly player count of 268,051,143. Fortnite averaged 98.9K concurrent viewers on Twitch in the same month, demonstrating that the game is still being watched and played by a sizable audience. But this doesn’t signify a steady deterioration. In reality, Fortnite received a fresh lease on life with the release of Fortnite Chapter 2: Season 1 in October 2019, and that vitality has continued ever since.
The number of players increased by roughly 44 million during that month, and the average monthly player count has since comfortably stayed above 200 million. The more recent pattern, however, seems to be one of a clear but slow decline. In December 2021, Fortnite Chapter 3: Season 1 was released. During that month, the game saw an average of over 275 million monthly users. However, this season doesn’t seem to have drawn as much attention as previous ones; the number of average monthly participants fell from 290 million in May 2021 to 268 million in April 2022.
That amounts to a 22 million player loss in less than a year.
So, Is Fortnite Dead?
The sheer amount of people who are still playing the game shows that Fortnite is still very much alive. But it’s understandable why you might believe Fortnite is no longer relevant. In terms of popularity, the game has undoubtedly experienced highs and lows over the past few years. Numerous variables have influenced how people perceive Fortnite’s popularity, even though looking at the facts reveals a far less pronounced fall. For instance, the streamer Tfue left Fortnite in May 2019 and claimed that he had become weary of playing it and was no longer having fun.
At the same time, Ninja, one of the top two streamers on Twitch along with Tfue, decided to stop playing the game. He gave similar justifications for why he thought the game had grown boring. Ninja has subsequently made a comeback, but losing two streamers like Ninja and Tfue—with a combined 25 million+ subscribers—was always going to have an impact on the game’s popularity. The number of players in the game has actually increased since that time, but it contributed to the notion in the media that Fortnite was no longer a viable game.
Despite the fact that it is still a very popular game, Fortnite hasn’t gained nearly as much traction in society since that time. Another element contributing to the idea that Fortnite is dead is the game’s recent introduction of a mode without constructing, which was a key component in Fortnite’s initial success. It goes without saying that eliminating a crucial aspect of gameplay would give gamers the impression that the game has changed from what it once was.
