Bridgerton, a Netflix Original series from Shondaland, is a passionate love story set in Regency England. The plot centres on the aristocratic Bridgerton siblings, who are members of London’s affluent beau monde and are all called alphabetically (Anthony, Benedict, Colin, Daphne, Eloise, Francesca, Gregory, and Hyacinth). The scorching, sexual romp “Bridgerton” recounts Daphne Bridgerton’s delectably scandalous romance with Simon Basset, the stunningly attractive Duke of Hastings, during the first season. But “Bridgerton” is not just about ball gowns and breeches; there are some serious issues that run softly, under the guise of fun.
When the Queen declares Daphne to be the Incomparable, her debut in society is guaranteed to be a smashing success. However, her brother Anthony, who hovers over her constantly and is too protective, quickly destroys her popularity with the other sex. Enter Anthony’s best friend from school, Simon Basset, the distant and wonderfully gorgeous Duke of Hastings. Simon offers a ploy that he and Daphne enter into a pretend courtship in order to give the appearance that he is unavailable (and therefore discourage the efforts of eager debutantes and their matchmaking mothers). Daphne should be able to attract the interest of other qualified suitors and return to the top of the most desirable list with a phoney courtship with the duke. Being drawn to one another is something Daphne and Simon do not anticipate. How successful is their trick? Let’s investigate. Spoilers follow.
Do Simon and Daphne Marry?
Simon and Daphne do get married, but it is not willingly, even though they are quite evidently in love with each other. Simon had been neglected and verbally abused by his father because he had a speech impediment as a child. As a sort of revenge for a crappy childhood, Simon promises his dying father that he will never produce an heir and let the Hastings line die with him. At a ball, their growing attraction leads to an unbidden passionate moment, and they share a not-so-chaste kiss, which is witnessed by Anthony. Viscount Bridgerton demands that the duke marry Daphnee, but Simon says no. Anthony challenges Simon to a duel at dawn, and it ends up being a duels over a mere kiss. The duke manages to stop the duel, and the two eventually get married.
Is Daphne Pregnant in Bridgerton?
When Simon informs Daphne that he cannot have children, she interprets this to mean that he is unable to have children. She is unaware of Simon’s furious pledge to his dying father. Simon and Daphne begin their gloriously passionate marriage, spending the majority of their honeymoon having love in various locations on the duke’s country estate. Daphne is unaware that Simon is using birth control by pulling out of her immediately before climaxing. Daphne’s ignorance derives from her lack of understanding of the mechanics of human reproduction. There was no idea of sex education in the nineteenth century, especially for the refined female population, for whom sexual subjects were thought unsuitable and inappropriate to discuss.
Daphne’s mother blubbers through intense shame about the “marriage act” in ambiguous euphemisms even before her wedding night. It’s no surprise that Daphne has no idea how sex and reproduction function. When Daphne discovers Simon’s devious technique of birth control, she is naturally furious and feels betrayed. Before confronting him about it, Daphne seduces Simon and forces him to ejaculate inside of her, not allowing him to pull out and therefore giving herself the opportunity to become pregnant.
Daphne hopes she has conceived as a result of the consequences of her conduct and the accompanying drama, but she does not. When she receives her period, she is upset. After Simon and Daphne reconcile by proclaiming their love for each other (and after Simon resolves to let go of his hatred for his father, which is preventing him from creating a family with Daphne), a brief epilogue confirms that Daphne becomes pregnant and gives birth to a baby boy. So, while we don’t see her pregnant throughout the series, we do see her becoming a mother at the conclusion, with a joyful Simon by her side.
