One of the most famous horror movie series ever made is called “A Nightmare on Elm Street.” The first movie came out in 1984, and it was Johnny Depp’s first time on the big screen. The 21-year-old musician-turned-actor played his first role on screen, and his career took off right away.
The plot of the movie is about Freddy Krueger, the bad guy, who scares a group of teenagers in their dreams. Stranger Things season 4 on Netflix was influenced by the movie, and Robert Englund, who played Krueger, played the new bad guy in the show.
Here is everything you need to know about the movie “A Nightmare on Elm Street” and the character played by Johnny Depp.
What is A Nightmare on Elm Street?
A Nightmare on Elm Street is a movie about four teenagers in Springwood, Ohio. It was made by Wes Craven, who also made The Hills Have Eyes and Scream. In their dreams, the ghost of Krueger, who killed children in the past, is scaring them.
There’s just one catch: if you die in your dream, you die in real life. Heather Langenkamp plays the main character, Nancy Thompson, who is determined to find out what’s going on in their town.
With the help of her boyfriend, Glen Lantz, who is played by Depp, they try to figure out what’s going on and put an end to the killings for good.
Who Was Johnny Depp in a Nightmare on Elm Street?
Depp made his acting debut as Glen Lantz, Thompson’s boyfriend who is determined to find out who is killing people in their town. Throughout the movie, Lantz is the voice of reason. He tries to make sense of the killings and convince his girlfriend that Krueger doesn’t exist.
Charlie Sheen (Platoon, Wall Street) was supposed to play Johnny Depp’s part, but Craven’s daughter talked him into hiring Depp instead. After Craven died in 2015, Depp thought back to the Toronto Film Festival, where Craven gave him his first big break.
He said, “When I tried out for the part, I read scenes with his daughter. I played music at the time. I wasn’t acting at all. It wasn’t something that was close to my mind or heart.” He went on to say, “Wes Craven was brave enough to hire me based on what his daughter thought.
“I guess she read with a bunch of actors, and after the casting sessions, she said, ‘No, that’s the guy.'” I always think about how she got me into this mess and how brave Wes Craven was to give me this job. But he was a good man, so old Wes, rest in peace.”
Has a Nightmare on Elm Street Had an Effect on Season 4 of Stranger Things?
A Nightmare on Elm Street has had a big impact on the new season of Stranger Things. Not only does Englund, who played Krueger, play the bad guy in the new show, but it also uses scenes from the movie.
I got to see episodes 1-4 of #StrangerThings and let me tell you it is easily the darkest season so far. The way it references A Nightmare On Elm Street is so smart and satisfying. Also, they better start campaigning for a Sadie Sink Emmy.
