Aboard Titanic

Thayer, then seventeen, was on a trip through Europe with his parents and a housekeeper called Margaret Fleming. On Wednesday, April 10, 1912, they boarded the RMS Titanic in Cherbourg in order to travel back to New York. Cabin C-68 was next to Jack’s parents’ cabin C-70. He changed into his clothes and went to a deck on the port side shortly after 11:40 p.m. to see what had transpired after the ship struck the iceberg. He went to the bow where he could just make out ice on the forward well deck but couldn’t find anything.

When Thayer woke them up, they followed him to the ship’s port side. As the ship started to list to port, they went back to their rooms to change into warmer clothing and life jackets. They went back to the terrace, but Thayer didn’t see his parents anymore. He assumed they had boarded a lifeboat after a quick search. Milton Long, a fellow traveller who Thayer had only met a few hours earlier, quickly arrived. Long and Thayer both attempted to join a lifeboat, but were refused due to the rule that women and children must board first. Long initially objected to jumping off the ship because Thayer was proposing it and Long wasn’t a good swimmer.

William Thayer was one of about 40 people who jumped or fell into the water and survived the sinking of the RMS Titanic on 15 April 1912. He was pulled to safety in Lifeboat 12 after spending the night on an overturned lifeboat that had been swept off its deck by a large wave. Thayer later recalled that the cries of hundreds of people in the water reminded him of the high-pitched hum of locusts in Pennsylvania.
