Development of Grey’s Anatomy Season 18

Krista Vernoff, the showrunner and executive producer of Grey’s Anatomy and Station 19, signed a two-year deal with ABC on March 25, 2021, to stay on both series for a possible nineteenth season.

Vernoff’s production business, Trip the Light Productions, is also tied to the series as part of the transaction. Despite the fact that she is no longer writing for the programme, Shonda Rhimes is still listed as a showrunner and executive producer after moving from ABC to Netflix in 2017.

The series will return to its prior time slot of Thursdays at 9:00 PM ET, with Station 19 serving as a lead-in, according to ABC’s plan for the 2021–22 broadcast season. In October 2021, ABC released its holiday programming plan, revealing that the season will have both a Thanksgiving and Christmas themed episode, which would run in November and December, respectively. The season finale will be the 400th episode in the series.

In July 2020, Kim Raver, Camilla Luddington, and Kevin McKidd each signed a three-year contract to continue as Dr. Teddy Altman, Dr. Jo Wilson, and Dr. Owen Hunt, respectively, on the show into a possible nineteenth season. Ellen Pompeo, Chandra Wilson, and James Pickens, Jr., who play Dr. Meredith Grey, Dr. Miranda Bailey, and Dr. Richard Webber, respectively, were all confirmed to return for the season. Pompeo signed a one-year contract with about US$575,000 per episode for her return, making her the highest-paid actress on broadcast television.

After departing in the previous season, Giacomo Gianniotti, Jesse Williams, and Greg Germann did not return as series regulars to play Dr. Andrew DeLuca, Dr. Jackson Avery, and Dr. Tom Koracick, respectively. Meanwhile, Scott Speedman was cast as Dr. Nick Marsh, a character he had previously played as a guest star in the fourteenth season.
