What We Know So Far About “Wellmania” on Netflix

Australian comedian and actress Celeste Barber is teaming up with streaming giant Netflix to create a new dramedy series called Wellmania, which follows a woman who is thrust into a wellness journey after being forced to make significant lifestyle changes for the sake of her health.

Wellmania is a Netflix original series co-created and produced by Brigid Delaney and Benjamin Law, who were both inspired by Delaney’s novel Wellmania: Misadventures in the Search for Wellness (The Family Law).

Writing will be overseen by Belinda King (The Elegant Gentleman’s Guide to Knife Fighting) and Jude Law (also an Executive Producer). Script Producer and writer Romina Accurso (The Heights, Spreadsheet) will be joined by writers Nick Coyle (Sarah’s Channel) and Amy Stewart (Hardball, The Heights) on the show.

The project was praised by actress Celeste Barber, who said:

I can’t contain my enthusiasm for this endeavor; everyone involved is fantastic. We’ve been at it for a while, and I can’t wait to share the results with everyone! Wellmania has all the qualities I look for in a story: strong, multifaceted female protagonists. I’m delighted to be an executive producer for Netflix, to bring this Australian tale to an international audience, and to have a say in how things get done.

Produced by Barber, Chris Oliver-Taylor, and Warren Clarke for Fremantle Australia, with Bree-Anne Sykes in the role of executive producer. On top of what had already been said, Clarke said:

This opportunity to collaborate with Celeste Barber and Netflix is a dream come true for Fremantle Australia. We eagerly anticipate the series’s reception in Australia and beyond.

What is the Plot of Wellmania?

According to Deadline, here is the logline for Netflix’s Wellmania:

Liv (Barber), a human tornado, suffers a significant health issue that makes her reevaluate her ‘live fast, die young’ philosophy. She dives headfirst into a quest for health and tries everything from conventional medicine to alternative therapies in an effort to get better quickly and resume her previous lifestyle.

The book was praised for shedding light on contentious wellness procedures advocated by celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow, whose show The Goop Lab! is included on the streaming service Netflix.

Who is Cast in Wellmania?

A member of the cast for Wellmania, Celeste Barber, was revealed in December 2021. Movies directed by Barber include “Back the Outback,” “The Letdown,” “How Not to Behave,” and many more.

The goal of Netflix Australia and New Zealand, which Celeste personifies, is to make Australians and New Zealanders universally beloved for being their unique, hilarious selves. It is inherent to the human condition to seek health and purpose, and in the aftermath of a global pandemic, this yearning has taken on greater significance. We are thrilled to have someone of Celeste’s warmth and comic talent lead our members through the ups and downs of self-improvement and self-understanding.
