As early as it may seem, Kang actor Jonathan Majors admits that he and director Destin Daniel Cretton have already begun talking about Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. Majors, who makes his acting debut in Loki as He Who Remains, is positioned to be the Avengers’ next major foe.
He plays the role of Thanos from the Infinity Saga, so there is understandably a lot of expectation on him to live up to Josh Brolin’s standards as a Marvel Studios villain. However, Majors will first reprise the role in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania before he takes the lead in his movie.
Recently, Marvel Studios rearranged their previously announced schedule, which involved postponing a few movies like Blade and Avengers: Secret Wars. The release date for Cretton’s Avengers: The Kang Dynasty remains 2025.
As the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to create the foundation for its upcoming climactic event, plot specifics for the movie are still few. The project appears to be moving forward well behind the scenes, with Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Cretton in charge of Avengers 5 and Jeff Loveness penning the script for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.
Majors reveals to Variety (via ComicBook) that he has already started talking to Cretton about portraying Kang in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, despite the fact that his attention has been on playing Kang in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.
Since there has been no mention of the actor’s reappearance in Loki season 2, it is unknown if he would appear in any other projects in between the films. Majors has nothing but positive things to say about the director of Avengers 5 despite their brief interaction. Below is the actor’s complete quote:
“We merely had brief conversations. We had a lengthy conversation, and I found him to be grounded, with an open heart and mind. The fact that he and his work are grounded, given that we’re dealing with myths, is what I believe to be the most significant aspect of it. A Kang is what? A movie is what? Do you know what an MCU movie is? Why does that matter? How does that appear? We are asking such questions, but they only make sense when they are firmly rooted in the actual events that are taking place between these individuals and what our species can learn from them.”
What The Kang Dynasty Should Expect From Majors & Cretton’s Early Talks
Whatever the case, it seems sense that Majors and Cretton are already considering Kang’s role in the Avengers 5 story. It is safe to assume that because he is the main character, the movie will delve deeper into his backstory. It’s also important to note that the two have never collaborated before.
The conversation may have only been intended to help them get to know one another, but based on Majors’ comment, it appears that they connected immediately away, which is a positive indicator. It’s also important to note that Marvel Studios has always valued the opinions of its entire cast and crew.
Majors’ early involvement in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty’s development aligns with that spirit of cooperation. To put things in perspective, the Russo Brothers and authors Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely began writing Avengers: Infinity War around the time Captain America: Civil War was released, which is the same time frame that Marvel Studios is currently working with Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.
The movie might have a lot more characters than Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, so more planning is necessary.
Kevin Feige has previously stated that Avengers 5 and Avengers: Secret Wars will be bigger than their predecessors. They might even be rushing things. Avengers: The Kang Dynasty’s exact story still needs to be decided by the filmmakers in order for filming to begin sometime in 2019.
